Our story begins with Lewis A. Peterson, MD, who graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1954. After serving as a medical officer in the Navy, Dr. Peterson completed his residency at Stanford University in California. Lewis Peterson, MD, began his private practice in ophthalmology in Salt Lake City in 1961. He and his colleague, George Pingree, MD, saw thousands of patients in the Salt Lake Valley up until his retirement in 1993. His professional work included glaucoma and cataract clinics as well as teaching projects in Nepal.
Each year the Utah Ophthalmology Society’s Lewis A. Petersen, MD, Humanitarian Award is given at the society’s annual meeting. The award recognizes a Utah ophthalmologist who has performed “exemplary service to the local, national, and/or international community.” This award is a clear tribute to a great person.
David Spencer, MD, another University of Utah School of Medicine graduate, completed medical school in 1987. He then completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine in Cincinnati, Ohio. Following the completion of his residency, Dr. Spencer moved back to the Salt Lake area and joined Dr. Lewis Peterson. After Dr. Peterson’s retirement, Dr. Spencer continued to provide great patient care for nearly 20 years and continued the legacy set in place by Dr. Peterson.
Following Dr. Spencer’s retirement from private practice, Dr. Gregory Christiansen took the helm after returning home to the Salt Lake Valley from private practice in Oregon. The clinic founded by Dr. Peterson was formally named Clarus Vision Clinic.
In 2014 Clarus Vision Clinic moved into a new building designed from the ground up to provide state of the art eye care for patients. The building was designed to reflect the history of the surrounding community and has received design and aesthetic awards. The new clinic has a LASIK suite and an optical shop to better serve patients.
Clarus Vision Clinic currently has two physicians available for you: Gregory Christiansen, MD, and Jason Rupp, MD, PhD. We look forward to continuing the excellence set in place by our founder over 50 years ago.
