WHY IS A YEARLY DIABETIC EYE EXAM SO IMPORTANT?

WHY IS A YEARLY DIABETIC EYE EXAM SO IMPORTANT?

Diabetic Eye Disease Has No Warning Signs

With diabetic eye disease, there are often no symptoms. By the time people start noticing vision loss, it is often too late. During a comprehensive diabetic eye exam, we can spot problems early when they are still treatable.

WHAT IS DIABETIC EYE DISEASE?

WHAT IS DIABETIC EYE DISEASE?

Diabetic eye disease is a group of eye conditions that can affect people with diabetes. It can affect many parts of the eye including the retina, macula, lens, and the optic nerve.

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

People with diabetes can have an eye disease called diabetic retinopathy. This is when high blood sugar levels cause damage to the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue that lines the back of the eye. These blood vessels can swell and leak. Or they can close, stopping blood from passing through. Sometimes abnormal new blood vessels grow on the retina. All of these changes can rob you of vision.

DIABETIC MACULAR EDEMA (DME)

DIABETIC MACULAR EDEMA (DME)

When blood vessels leak, the retina swells. When the macula – the area on the retina in which you achieve the greatest focus – swells, it is called macular edema. This is the most common reason why people with diabetes lose their vision.

CATARACTS

CATARACTS

Cataracts are a clouding of the eye’s natural lens. According to research, adults with diabetes may be 2-5 times more likely than those without diabetes to develop cataracts. Cataracts also tend to develop at an earlier age in people with diabetes compared to non-diabetics.
